Private Water Operators in Cambodia
Overview
Currently, only an estimated 30% of the population of Cambodia has access to clean piped water.
Cambodia has over 450 private water operators (PWOs) who are granted fixed-term monopoly licenses by the government. These innovative, often family-run businesses, supply 50% of household piped water across Cambodia. However, PWOs are often unable to serve a significant proportion of households within their license area, particularly in rural and semi-rural areas due to financing limitations.
BOP has partnered with Stone Family Foundation, iSEA and the Bank for Investment and Development of Cambodia (BIDC) to provide accessible finance for PWOs to invest in water infrastructure to enable them to reach thousands of households which don’t have access to clean and safe piped water today.
Improving access to clean, safe water will have significant health, social and economic benefits for Cambodian communities.
