Overview
Many young people face significant barriers to higher education, including high tuition fees and limited availability of spaces at publicly funded higher education institutions.
These barriers reduce access to skilled, decent employment opportunities paying a living wage for disadvantaged young people, ultimately impacting on individual livelihoods and economic development.
Chancen International created the Future of Work programme with the aim of supporting disadvantaged students in Kenya, Rwanda and South Africa to overcome these barriers and access meaningful employment. This is done through the provision of income share agreements (ISAs), which involve the upfront funding of tuition fees for eligible students. Students only begin repayment after completing their study, securing employment, and earning above a minimum income threshold.
Delivery innovations
Although the programme is in its early stages, some examples of more flexible, effective delivery include:
- Developing a live, dynamic reporting dashboard that provides real-time insights into core programme metrics, including student enrolment, ISA disbursements, and repayment activity. Historically, data reporting for the Future of Work programme has been largely manual and limited to quarterly updates. This lag in data availability has made it challenging for the team to identify issues and respond swiftly to emerging trends or student needs. The dashboard development has involved regular engagement with Chancen International’s data team to ensure it is both accurate and fit for purpose. While currently in beta mode, the dashboard is expected to be fully operational by the end of Q3 2025.
